Above, from left to right: Cookie (Susan), Joanne, and Linda. San Francisco, ten days ago. Photo credit: a young woman on the street. Adjusted from color to black-and-white by Marnie Nunnemaker, who knows how to reach into a photo and highlight its soul.
As Linda Russ tells the story: “We’ve all been friends for 63 years. We were together this time for a reunion of 1964 grads who were Pi Phis [Pi Beta Phi sorority] at Cal Berkeley. Here, we were on Nob Hill waiting for an Uber and decided to walk up to the view. When we returned, the young woman who had been standing on the corner, and who was still there when we came back, gave us the picture she’d taken and said, ‘When I’m your age, I hope I have friends like this.’”
You can. Start now.
And never pass up the chance to see the view.
What a fabulous morning I've had along those lines: a delightful email exchange from a childhood friend about Ferndale Elementary's kite contests; and then a long telephone call from a friend in Arizona. I was her babysitter when I was in high school. When her husband died, she moved away and it broke my heart. I've got goosebumps of my own today. We do need each other, even miles and miles apart.
The photo gave me goosebumps when Linda shared it with me.
Wendy, you’ve given such wise and thoughtful words to my goosebumps ♥️
